What is Pickleball?
This is one of the fastest-growing sports in America! The game features many elements of tennis, ping-pong, and badminton.
The game was developed by Congressman Joel Pritchard from Washington State and Bill Bell, a local businessman in 1965.
From that time, the game was developed and incorporated into the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA). 2008 marked the year that USAPA published the first Official Tournament Rule book.
In 2021, with over 2,3000 registered players, the 2021 Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championship, held at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Palm Springs, CA was the largest tournament to date.
For the history of the sport, visit the History page on the USAPA website.
What is a Pickleball?
Pickleballs are designed for either indoor or outdoor use. Indoor balls are lighter and made of softer plastic, while outdoor balls have more rigid plastic and fewer holes. Indoor balls have 26 holes, while outdoor balls have 40.
How Big is the
Court?
The court is the size of a badminton court and a slightly modified tennis net. It is 44' in length x 20' wide. It is possible to fit 4 courts on 1 Tennis court.
Player Rating System
Player ratings are from 1.0 - 5.5+, where 1.0 - 2.0 are just starting to pickleball, and 5.5+ is a top-caliber player.
USAPA has a webpage dedicated to helping players determine their skills.
Ratings at the early level (2.0) include understanding the game, keeping score, and demonstrating forehands, backhands, and volleys. In addition, a player needs to demonstrate hand-eye coordination, quickness, and mobility.
